Davenport tournament under way (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

In the first round of the men’s open singles division in the Davenport City Tennis Championships yesterday, James Smythe and Arjun Venkatasubramanian won three-set matches. Smythe downed Simon Sjogren 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Venkatasubramanian defeated Christopher Miller 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. On the women’s side, Anne Garland needed to go the distance to down Joy Fuhr 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 in a first-round match.
